LA PALMERA READY FOR TAX-FREE CROWDS
Traffic control beefed up; retailers entice shoppers with back-to-school savings
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (August 19, 2010) – The new school year is just days away and many residents have been waiting for the August 20-22 tax-free weekend to stock up on clothing and other back-to-school items.
“We’ve already had a pretty strong summer but we generally see a spike on tax-free weekend,” said La Palmera General Manager Fred Walters. “Residents now expect it each year and will hold off on buying many items to save on the state sales tax. The savings do add up and allow customers to purchase additional items they might not otherwise buy.”
Officers from the Corpus Christi Police Department will be on site Friday through Sunday to help with increased traffic. In addition to the regular valet stand at the main entrance, a second valet stand will be set up on the opposite side of the mall near the parking garage.
Tax-free items include most basic school supplies as well backpacks, clothing, shoes and many accessories under $100 used by elementary and secondary students. Many of the La Palmera’s retailers are offering specials on these items including shoes and accessories at Stride Rite, uniforms at The Children’s Place, basic t-shirts and shorts from Champs, denim and other clothing and accessories from Aeropostale, Pac Sun and Zumiez as well as clothing specials for younger children at Gymboree.
In an effort to take advantage of the heavier volume, many stores whose merchandise does not qualify for the tax-free status are also offering special deals.
“It will never match the day after Thanksgiving for shopping, but the tax-free weekend does provide a little boost each year,” said Walters.
