Local Collegiate Artists Create Green Art

Arte Verde contest & exhibit celebrates Earth Month April 1–May 17; $3,500 in prizes to be awarded

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (March 14, 2011) – La Palmera is looking for the most creative artists from Coastal Bend colleges to create artwork with an earth-friendly message for the second annual Arte Verde, presented by Allied Waste Services.

The Arte Verde event will honor Earth Month with all entries on exhibit April 1 through May 17 in the new artspace area located on the upper level of La Palmera. The call for entries was sent to local colleges and requires students to create a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork made from recycled and traditional art materials.

“This was such a great exhibit for us last year we definitely wanted to make it an annual event,” said La Palmera General Manager Fred Walters. “We are happy to partner with Allied Waste Services once again to give our talented student artists a place to exhibit their creative works. The event also fits into our plan to implement and promote green-minded initiatives here at La Palmera.”

All entries will be judged on their earth-friendly message, creativity and execution and must be submitted to the La Palmera Concierge by Friday, March 18 at 9 p.m. A panel of judges will select winners on March 21 with a check presentation by Allied Waste Services to the top three winners scheduled for Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, from 5:30-7 p.m. in artspace. The top winner will receive $2,000 with $1,000 for second place and $500 for third.

The 2010 contest and exhibit received dozens of entries from area schools including Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Kingsville, Victoria College, South Texas College and others with TAMUCC student Michele Clements taking home the $2,000 top prize for her pelican sculpture.

“Allied Waste Services is pleased to return as the sponsor of this creative event,” said Allied Waste Services General Manager Robert Bradley. “Our company is dedicated to preserving the environment so it only makes sense for us to support and promote this type of exhibit. It’s great to see all the creative ways our local young artists find to express their earth-friendly messages.”

Contest rules for Arte Verde, presented by Allied Waste Services, are as follows:

  • Open to all area college students.
  • Must have an earth-friendly theme (i.e. “Save the Oceans” – use plastic bags and other materials that cause harm to our oceans and sea life in your piece.)
  • Use only recycled items (glass, aluminum, pop top tabs, old cell phones, plastic bags, paper goods, batteries, etc.) along with traditional art products (paint, colors, markers, glue, etc.).
  • All art must be created in an 18” X 24” dimension (vertical or horizontal)
  • Final submissions must include a completed “Arte Verde Information Sheet” along with the artwork. (Information sheet can be found at lapalmera.com).
  • Final submissions must be titled on both the entry form and back of the artwork.

Allied Waste has continued to develop its own green initiatives including Corpus Christi’s new recycling program. The single-stream system kicked off in January of this year allowing homeowner’s to place all types of recyclable materials together into one large blue bin. The new machine being used at the recycling plant is able to process 2,000 tons of material each week, more than double what the old system could handle, with fourteen truckloads of material being sorted each day. The sorted recyclables are sold to companies around the world with proceeds being used to continue funding the local recycling program.
