Arte Verde contest open to all students; exhibit opening now set for April 8

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (March 31, 2011) – La Palmera has extended the entry deadline for Arte Verde, presented by Allied Waste Services. The event, now in its second year, was originally designed for college-level artists but after several inquiries from younger students, La Palmera agreed to open up the contest for all ages and extend the entry deadline to Monday, April 4.

The Arte Verde event, which honors Earth Month, will have all entries on exhibit April 8 through May 17 in the new artspace area located on the upper level of La Palmera. Each of the one-of-a-kind pieces of art will be made from recycled and traditional art materials.

All entries will be judged on their earth-friendly message, creativity and execution and must be submitted to the La Palmera Concierge by Monday, April 4 at 9 p.m. A panel of judges will select winners on April 6 with a check presentation by Allied Waste Services to the top three winners scheduled for Earth Day, Friday, April 22, from 5:30-7 p.m. in artspace. The top winner will receive $2,000 with $1,000 for second place and $500 for third.

The 2010 contest and exhibit received dozens of entries from area schools including Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Kingsville, Victoria College, South Texas College and others with TAMUCC student Michele Clements taking home the $2,000 top prize for her pelican sculpture.

Contest rules for Arte Verde, presented by Allied Waste Services, are as follows:

  • Open to all area college students.
  • Must have an earth-friendly theme (i.e. “Save the Oceans” – use plastic bags and other materials that cause harm to our oceans and sea life in your piece.)
  • Use only recycled items (glass, aluminum, pop top tabs, old cell phones, plastic bags, paper goods, batteries, etc.) along with traditional art products (paint, colors, markers, glue, etc.).
  • All art must be created in an 18” X 24” dimension (vertical or horizontal)
  • Final submissions must include a completed “Arte Verde Information Sheet” along with the artwork. (Information sheet can be found at lapalmera.com).
  • Final submissions must be titled on both the entry form and back of the artwork.
