SHOPPERS INVITED TO EXPERIENCE NEW LA PALMERA FOOD COURT
"Friday Night Lights" heartthrob Jeremy Sumpter part of Oct. 24 opening event
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Oct. 15, 2009) - The new 600-seat La Palmera Cafes will soon be serving up a variety of dining and snack options to hungry shoppers. To celebrate, La Palmera is partnering with the Ready or Not Foundation to host a public party and fundraiser featuring Ready or Not spokesman and teen heartthrob Jeremy Sumpter on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the new 36,000-square-foot food court.
The 20-year-old Sumpter has appeared in numerous films and television series, including his current role as J.D. McCoy on NBC-TV's "Friday Night Lights." The popular star will do an autograph session during the event; he will also pose for "red carpet" photos with fans for $5 with all proceeds to benefit the Ready or Not Foundation, which targets better treatment and a cure for pediatric brain cancer.
The event also includes live music from Equal People and samples of menu items provided by food court merchants Sarku Japan, Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen and Chick-fil-A as well as Great American Cookie from 11 a.m.-noon and again from 1-2 p.m. The Ready or Not Foundation will also be on hand to raise awareness for their mission to help children as well as taking entries to win a basket of Sumpter autographed DVDs of his movies and "Friday Night Lights" television series.
The Ready or Not Foundation was founded by Barbara Canales following the diagnosis of her daughter Jackie's brain tumor at the age of 6, a discovery literally made by accident. Jackie was playing hide and go seek at school when she bumped her head on an oak tree and the ensuing trip to the pediatrician for a quick CAT scan revealed a large tumor in the back of Jackie's brain. Three years later she is in remission but the life-changing ordeal inspired Canales to start the Ready or Not Foundation, which delivers an unprecedented 100% of donations to research.
"We are pleased to partner with the Ready or Not Foundation," said La Palmera General Manager Fred Walters. "They are a first class organization working very hard to help children. I hope everyone will come down and support the good work they do.
"We are also very excited about this event because it's the first element of our $50 million in renovations to open. We have a few elements being added in the coming weeks and we hope our shoppers will be as happy as we are to see it completed. It's going to be a beautiful addition to La Palmera."
Additional food court locations for Subway, Stir Fry 88 and H.J. Smoothies & Creamery are scheduled to open by early November. The food court will also soon feature a spectacular 18-foot, 4,400-gallon aquarium.
