CoCo’s Community Cradle event to assist Corpus Christi Metro Ministries’ Rainbow House

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Oct. 2, 2018) – Corpus Christi radio personality CoCo from K99 Country is going to be a mom of twins — a boy and a girl, already named Levi and Grace — and La Palmera is hosting a special baby shower in her honor to assist families in need.

CoCo’s Community Cradle baby shower will be held Thursday, Oct. 11, from 4–7 p.m. in Center Court complete with games and activities, prizes, music, photo ops, refreshments and more (while supplies last). The shower is free and open to the public.

The event honors CoCo, but the real beneficiary will be families needing help in the Coastal Bend community. Guests may bring a gift for CoCo if they choose, but all are encouraged to bring a “shower gift” to benefit homeless families and others in need through the Rainbow House and Corpus Christi Metro Ministries. The Rainbow House gift list is very simple: diapers, all sizes, including pull-ups, baby wipes, or cash donations, which are always welcome. Each year, Rainbow House provides essential baby items and more to mothers in residence there, as well as to homeless, poor and working poor in the community, making it one of the largest out of pocket expense facing the organization.

A long-time advocate for Metro Ministries and Rainbow House, CoCo has openly talked about her health struggles with earlier pregnancies, often referring to her current pregnancy as a miracle and her twins-to-be as her “rainbow babies.”

“I have a very personal connection to Metro Ministries and the wonderful work they do in our community,” said CoCo. “Rainbow House in particular is special because it gives homeless families a place to land while they receive support and assistance. As a mom-to-be, and so lucky to be one, I think about my little miracle ‘rainbow babies’ and cannot imagine the daily struggles some families face. I just want to encourage everyone to join with me in doing what they can to make a difference in the lives of these moms and their precious children.”

“We are so blessed to know CoCo and her passion for changing the mindset of what homelessness really looks like in the Coastal Bend,” said Patty Clark, Metro Ministries CEO and executive director. “It’s ambassadors like her that bring attention to Metro Ministries and what we do to provide people with the tools they need to move into sustainable living. The average age of the homeless child we served last year was 7 years old, which is why it’s vital that we take a holistic approach to providing mom with not only food and shelter, but also the case management she needs to get back on her feet.

“We want to thank everyone in advance from the bottom of our hearts for their support of our dear CoCo and the countless mothers and children that will benefit from this baby shower.”

Tax-free savings August 10–12; La Palmera retailers offering savings and extended hours

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (August 3, 2018) – Back-to-school shopping is in full swing as shoppers and retailers prepare for the Texas Sales Tax Holiday Friday, August 10, through Sunday, August 12.

Tax-free items once again include those priced under $100 used by elementary and secondary students, such as basic school supplies, backpacks, clothing and uniforms, shoes and many accessories. Shoppers will also find special deals at many stores whose merchandise does not qualify for tax-free status. Select La Palmera retailers will have extended hours for the three-day event, a list of which can be found online at lapalmera.com and on the mall’s Facebook page.

According to an annual back-to-school survey conducted by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), nearly 90% of back-to-school shoppers said they were planning to spend money in brick and mortar stores, with approximately three-quarters saying they plan to spend more this year than in 2017. The number one reason for shopping in stores is the ability to physically see, touch or try on the merchandise, followed by better prices, good deals and promotions.

At La Palmera, shoppers will find children’s shoes and accessories, including backpacks, at Journeys Kidz; uniforms at The Children’s Place, Dillard’s, JCPenney and Macy’s; athletic t-shirts and shorts from Champs Sports; denim and other clothing and accessories from Aeropostale, Buckle, francesca’s, H&M, OshKosh B’gosh, PacSun, Tillys, Vans and Zumiez; as well as makeup and grooming products at MAC and Ulta Beauty. A complete list of eligible items can be found at https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/publications/98-490/.

The Corpus Christi Police Department will have officers on site throughout the weekend, helping to direct traffic if needed. Shoppers will find free covered parking in the garage off McArdle, as well as valet parking for only $5 at the mall’s main entrance by P.F. Chang’s China Bistro.

K Space Contemporary art gallery bringing unique, large scale art and events to La Palmera

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (March 27, 2018) – The art of shopping will soon take on a more literal meaning with the announcement of a new partnership between La Palmera and K Space Contemporary art gallery making the mall an extension of the K Space gallery located in downtown Corpus Christi.

As the oldest alternative art space in the Coastal Bend, the popular non-profit organization is dedicated to presenting and promoting contemporary art and providing a forum for emerging and mid-career artists whose works are experimental, non-commercial, or difficult to exhibit due to unusual installation requirements or site-specific ideas.

K Space Contemporary and La Palmera will celebrate the culture of the Coastal Bend by featuring large scale art installations year round throughout the mall, the first of which will be on display beginning in April in honor of Contemporary Art Month. La Palmera will also host a number of K Space Contemporary Summer Mural Art Camps, with students creating permanent, large scale interior murals for shoppers to enjoy.

“We have wanted to create a partnership like this for some time,” said Fred Walters, La Palmera vice president and general manager. “La Palmera is the perfect venue for these kinds of exhibits and events, providing a win-win for everyone: artists will gain the exposure they desire and need while our millions of shoppers gain an appreciation of art and find yet another reason to visit.”

Stores gear up for day after Thanksgiving; La Palmera holiday programs helping local non-profits

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Nov. 17, 2015) – La Palmera stores are preparing for the traditional start of the holiday shopping season as residents prepare to give — with gifts for family and friends and by helping those in need.

Although Macy’s and JCPenney will open late Thanksgiving Day, La Palmera officially will be closed. JCPenney will open at 2 p.m. and Macy’s at 5 p.m.; shoppers may access the stores through the outer doors of each as the mall entrances will not be open. On Friday, Nov. 24, the mall doors will open at 6 a.m. It’s anticipated that a number of stores will open early that day, with all stores open by the regular time of 10 a.m. A full schedule of store openings will soon be available at lapalmera.com.

Meanwhile, many of La Palmera’s annual holiday events have already begun.

“We donate and help raise tens of thousands of dollars each year for local charities, but the holidays are always the busiest since giving is on everyone’s mind,” said Fred Walters, vice president and general manager of La Palmera. “This holiday season we’ll again be hosting several of our popular fundraising programs designed to help a variety of local organizations as well as continuing our donation efforts for victims of Hurricane Harvey.”

La Palmera’s Forest of Giving, a collection of uniquely decorated trees representing 10 local organizations, is located near Concierge where shoppers may cast votes for their favorite tree through Dec. 16. The tree receiving the most votes will win $1,000 for the represented organization, including: Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, For the Love of Strays, American Red Cross, The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center, Triumph Over Kid Cancer, decorated by King High School Student Council, Burn Pits 360 Veterans Organization, Corpus Christi Professional Fire Fighter Relief & Outreach, The Montessori School of Corpus Christi, Mission Pawsible Animal Assistance and GenCure with Be The Match.

The popular “Pet Night with Santa,” presented by Apollo Towing, will also return for six nights beginning in November.
