Recent survey says gift cards may be the way to go

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Dec. 8, 2015) – Although many say they think it’s better to give an actual gift as opposed to a gift card, what they’re not telling you is that they would really rather receive a gift card themselves.

According to a recent Bizrate Insights survey, 61% of those questioned hope to receive gift cards this holiday season, yet only 46% plan to give them as gifts. In fact, of the more than 11,000 online shoppers age 18 and over who responded to the survey, more than 70% ages 18-34 and more than 65% of those 35-49 say they prefer receiving a gift card.

“Without a doubt, our retailers do see an increase in gift card sales this time of year,” said Fred Walters, vice president and general manager of La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera. “Many of our shoppers who come the day after Christmas are here using their gift cards to take advantage of the remaining holiday sales.’

There are more than 130 retail and dining locations in the La Palmera Shopping District with many selling a store branded gift card. For added convenience, shoppers may also purchase a La Palmera Gift Card, which is accepted at almost all stores and restaurants at La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera.

Available at Concierge or online at lapalmera.com in a limited edition holiday design, the La Palmera Gift Card may be purchased in amounts ranging from $10-$500.

La Palmera holiday programs raise awareness and dollars for local no-profits; additional “Pet Night with Santa” events added

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Dec. 1, 2015) – The holidays are a time to give and shoppers are doing just that through La Palmera’s annual holiday programs.

“We work to assist local charities throughout the year, but the holidays are especially busy since giving is top of mind,” said Fred Walters, vice president and general manager of La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera. “We host a number of programs and events at La Palmera each year to assist as many organizations as possible, including 15 different groups this holiday season.”

Because of the overwhelming response, pet lovers will now have two more opportunities for the popular “Pet Night with Santa,” with a portion of photo proceeds befitting local animal organizations. Tuesday, Dec. 8, will be the make-up event for Paws Up, rescheduled as the result of a power outage during the original Nov. 24 event, and Wednesday, Dec. 9, is a newly added event, which will benefit The Cattery. Both events are 5-8 p.m. This year’s previous two events benefitted For the Love of Strays and Mission Pawsible. As always, only dogs and cats are permitted and all animals must remain on a leash or in a carrier at all times.

Guests can take advantage of La Palmera’s popular charity gift-wrapping service every Friday through Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. beginning Dec. 4, as well as the week of Christmas. Diners Invited to “Try a Taco, Take a Pic” to Help Restaurant Donate $100,000 for the Second Annual Year

Scottsdale, Ariz. (September 28, 2015) – This October, for the second year running, national restaurant chain P.F. Chang’s aims to donate $100,000 to support breast cancer awareness. Diners are invited to join the fight by helping the restaurant meet its goal to benefit the American Cancer Society. The upscale Asian-inspired restaurant will also adorn more than 300 of its iconic Warrior Horses, symbols of strength and protection, with bright, pink ribbon-shaped floral wreaths in recognition of those who have been impacted by the disease. The campaign begins on Wednesday, September 30, with P.F. Chang’s restaurants across the country hosting kickoff events.

“Following last year’s outpouring of support for the cause from guests and employees, we’re honored to again demonstrate our commitment as we donate to the American Cancer Society,” said Michael Osanloo, Chief Executive Officer of P.F. Chang’s. “Everyone has a horse in this race. Our iconic Warrior Horses represent strength and protection, and by adorning them in pink floral wreaths, we reinforce our mission to help spread awareness.”

How to Donate: “Try a Taco, Take a Pic”

From October 1 through October 31, diners can join the fight against breast cancer and help P.F. Chang’s reach its goal of donating $100,000 to the American Cancer Society by triggering a $1 donation via the following actions:

  1. Purchase of the Jicama Street Tacos at any U.S. P.F. Chang’s location.
  2. Share a picture in front of P.F. Chang’s iconic Warrior Horse(s) on Twitter or Instagram with #PFChangsPink, or upload a photo directly on the tab on the P.F. Chang’s Facebook page or at pfchangs.com/pfchangspink. Each shared picture will become part of a digital photo mosaic on pfchangs.com/pfchangspink, signifying someone who has a horse in the race against breast cancer.

The photos will come together to create a digital mosaic of a P.F. Chang’s Warrior Horse—a symbol of strength and protection for those whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. Diners can visit pfchangs.com/pfchangspink to find and share their personal photo.

#PFChangsPink Kicks Off with Rally Events Across the Country on Wednesday, September 30

In a show of nationwide support for the cause, each P.F. Chang’s location in the continental U.S. will host a kickoff event on Wednesday, September 30 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Employees, restaurant guests, local business owners, public health advocates and other members of the community are invited to participate in adorning the restaurants’ iconic Warrior Horses with pink floral wreaths in recognition of those who have been impacted by the disease. Restaurants will hand out complimentary Jicama Street Tacos and small pink ribbons that can be dedicated to someone and added to the ribbons of hope in the restaurants. The ribbons of hope will collect and grow throughout October.

Organizers pleased with month-long campaign for childhood cancer awareness

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (September 25, 2015) – The Ready.Set.Gold. campaign at La Palmera, raising awareness and funds for all forms of pediatric cancer, prepares to wrap a successful month with a special fashion show on Sunday, Sept. 27.

Scheduled for 2-3 p.m. in Center Court, the show will feature fall trends for adults and kids from a variety of La Palmera stores including Macy’s, Michael Kors Shop in Shop at Macy’s, Scrub Hub, Journey’s, Sun Optics and others, with Build-A-Bear providing some special touches. Students from Aveda Institute Corpus Christi will provide hair and make-up for the 25 featured models.

Two children staying at the Ronald McDonald House who are affected by cancer will participate in the show, while others will be special guests at the event. The show is open to the public and limited seating is available on a first come, first served basis.

La Palmera partnered with the Ready or Not Foundation and other local organizations for Ready.Set.Gold., which officially ends on September 30.  The month has included an informational display featuring local children affected by cancer, children’s activities, and fundraising through a special tree in Center Court with individuals donating to purchase “golden” leaves to fill the tree. All funds will be donated for research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center in Houston, the largest pediatric cancer center in the U.S.

“The primary goal of Ready.Set.Gold. has been to raise awareness for pediatric cancer during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month,” said Fred Walters, vice president and general manager of La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera. “With the help of our partners, we have been able to reach hundreds of thousands of guests this month at La Palmera.”

La Palmera’s primary partner in Ready.Set.Gold. is the Corpus Christi-based Ready or Not Foundation, founded by Barbara Canales following the 2006 diagnosis of her daughter Jackie’s brain tumor at age 6. Jackie remains in remission and the organization continues its mission to raise funds and awareness for pediatric brain cancer research.

Parking upgrades underway at La Palmera; new construction at The Shops at La Palmera

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (September 15, 2015) –The La Palmera Shopping District continues to make improvements as it prepares for additional tenants at La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera.

“We try to be proactive with upgrades and repairs so the guest experience remains top notch,” said Fred Walters, general manager for La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera. “Guest amenities are also a factor in attracting national retailers, such as Michael Kors and Tilly’s, which were recently announced.”

Crews have begun work on rebuilding the main parking lot at La Palmera. Fencing is up along South Padre Island Drive at the outer edges of the main parking lot up to the sidewalk by Dillard’s where demolition of the existing parking area has already started. Crews will work their way east in sections towards JCPenney and Chili’s over the next couple of months as they work to complete the project before the holiday season.

“This is something we have been planning for some time and felt was a priority,” said Walters, “Although we have made repairs over the years since we purchased the mall in 2008, we believe this is the first time there has been major reconstruction of the parking areas in more than 20 years.”

While work continues, crews are setting up alternate ring roads around the mall to lessen any inconvenience to guests. Signage will direct shoppers to available free parking during the project, and valet parking will remain available seven days a week for $5 Monday through Thursday and $7 Friday through Sunday. To keep its guests informed, La Palmera will post parking updates on its Facebook page.

Crews are also in the process of replacing two large “glass pyramid” skylights in the west end of the mall, as well as several HVAC roof units, which provide cooling and heating to the common areas.

Since purchasing the mall in 2008, parent company Trademark Property and joint venture partner Institutional Mall Investors LLC (IMI) have invested more than $50 million for renovation work on La Palmera.

At The Shops at La Palmera, construction will soon begin on a new building to house three new tenants, yet to be announced, which will be located near Chipotle Mexican Grill on the corner of Staples Street and McArdle Road. Facade work was recently completed on the building adjacent to DSW Shoes, the current location for SAS Shoes, Sunshine Dental, and Victoria’s Jewels and future location for the recently announced Salons by JC.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (August 27, 2015) September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and La Palmera is teaming up with the Ready or Not Foundation and other local organizations to raise awareness – and funds – for all forms of pediatric cancer through Ready. Set. Gold.

Cancer affects more than 15,000 children under the age of 19 annually with roughly 2,000 losing their fight to some form of pediatric cancer every year. That’s a weekly average of 38 children – roughly the equivalent of losing a classroom of children each and every week.

Gold is the color associated with pediatric cancer awareness, and La Palmera shoppers will see touches of gold through the mall, as well as special events throughout September.

The palm trees near S. Padre Island Drive will be wrapped in large gold ribbons with banners and information about local kids who have battled, or are battling, various forms of pediatric cancer posted in Center Court. There will also be a special tree standing more than 10 feet tall in Center Court that individuals can fill with “golden” leaves through a minimum $1 donation per leaf, with all donations benefitting pediatric cancer research.

Other events include a special Tide Turners Kids Club event Tuesday, September 1, 10 a.m.-noon, in Center Court near the tree, which includes activities geared to awareness and support for children affected by pediatric cancer. Each weekend (Sept. 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27), there will be children’s activities, and on Sunday, September 27, shoppers will be treated to a Ready. Set. Gold. Fashion Show in Center Court from 2-3 p.m.

A special website is also being launched for the month-long effort – www.readysetgold.gives  – providing information and ways to donate. All donations collected through the website and various events at La Palmera throughout September will be used for research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center in Houston, the largest pediatric cancer center in the U.S.

“The primary goal of Ready. Set. Gold. is to raise awareness for pediatric cancer by finding visual ways to make it top of mind, particularly during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September,” said Fred Walters, general manager of La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera.  “Just as the color pink has become synonymous with breast cancer, gold is the color associated with childhood cancer, hence the campaign name of Ready. Set. Gold. With more than 650,000 visitors each month at La Palmera, we reach a wide audience of local residents and tourists, which is a great way to raise awareness and spread the word.”

La Palmera’s partner in Ready. Set. Gold. is the Corpus Christi-based Ready or Not Foundation, founded by Barbara Canales following the 2006 diagnosis of her daughter Jackie’s brain tumor at age 6. Jackie remains in remission, but the life-changing ordeal inspired Canales to start the Ready or Not Foundation, which has delivered an unprecedented 100% of donations and matching grants – more than $2 million to date – to pediatric brain cancer research.

“My personal situation inspired me to start Ready or Not Foundation, but brain cancer is only one form of pediatric cancer,” said Canales. “Although it has been my family’s fight all these years, my goal in partnering with La Palmera on Ready. Set. Gold. is to raise awareness for all forms of childhood cancer and make it everyone’s fight.”

  • There are 15 major types of cancer in children and adolescents with more than 100 subtypes.
  • Survival rates for all pediatric cancers as a whole are now above 80% and moving higher, but some forms are more deadly with a very low survival rate.
  • Pediatric cancer research and treatments assist in the treatment of adult forms of cancer.
