La Palmera to Launch Ready.Set.Gold. for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (August 27, 2015) September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and La Palmera is teaming up with the Ready or Not Foundation and other local organizations to raise awareness – and funds – for all forms of pediatric cancer through Ready. Set. Gold.

Cancer affects more than 15,000 children under the age of 19 annually with roughly 2,000 losing their fight to some form of pediatric cancer every year. That’s a weekly average of 38 children – roughly the equivalent of losing a classroom of children each and every week.

Gold is the color associated with pediatric cancer awareness, and La Palmera shoppers will see touches of gold through the mall, as well as special events throughout September.

The palm trees near S. Padre Island Drive will be wrapped in large gold ribbons with banners and information about local kids who have battled, or are battling, various forms of pediatric cancer posted in Center Court. There will also be a special tree standing more than 10 feet tall in Center Court that individuals can fill with “golden” leaves through a minimum $1 donation per leaf, with all donations benefitting pediatric cancer research.

Other events include a special Tide Turners Kids Club event Tuesday, September 1, 10 a.m.-noon, in Center Court near the tree, which includes activities geared to awareness and support for children affected by pediatric cancer. Each weekend (Sept. 12-13, 19-20 and 26-27), there will be children’s activities, and on Sunday, September 27, shoppers will be treated to a Ready. Set. Gold. Fashion Show in Center Court from 2-3 p.m.

A special website is also being launched for the month-long effort – www.readysetgold.gives  – providing information and ways to donate. All donations collected through the website and various events at La Palmera throughout September will be used for research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center in Houston, the largest pediatric cancer center in the U.S.

“The primary goal of Ready. Set. Gold. is to raise awareness for pediatric cancer by finding visual ways to make it top of mind, particularly during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September,” said Fred Walters, general manager of La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera.  “Just as the color pink has become synonymous with breast cancer, gold is the color associated with childhood cancer, hence the campaign name of Ready. Set. Gold. With more than 650,000 visitors each month at La Palmera, we reach a wide audience of local residents and tourists, which is a great way to raise awareness and spread the word.”

La Palmera’s partner in Ready. Set. Gold. is the Corpus Christi-based Ready or Not Foundation, founded by Barbara Canales following the 2006 diagnosis of her daughter Jackie’s brain tumor at age 6. Jackie remains in remission, but the life-changing ordeal inspired Canales to start the Ready or Not Foundation, which has delivered an unprecedented 100% of donations and matching grants – more than $2 million to date – to pediatric brain cancer research.

“My personal situation inspired me to start Ready or Not Foundation, but brain cancer is only one form of pediatric cancer,” said Canales. “Although it has been my family’s fight all these years, my goal in partnering with La Palmera on Ready. Set. Gold. is to raise awareness for all forms of childhood cancer and make it everyone’s fight.”

  • There are 15 major types of cancer in children and adolescents with more than 100 subtypes.
  • Survival rates for all pediatric cancers as a whole are now above 80% and moving higher, but some forms are more deadly with a very low survival rate.
  • Pediatric cancer research and treatments assist in the treatment of adult forms of cancer.

La Palmera Social Media Campaign Garners Industry “Likes”

“#myLPreason” campaign wins national award, community support

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (June 10, 2015) – La Palmera’s most recent effort to effectively incorporate social media into its marketing has paid off. The “myLPreason” campaign is not only popular with shoppers, it has also garnered national recognition, receiving a prestigious Silver MAXI Award from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).

The U.S. MAXI Awards showcase creative and innovative practices that paint the picture for the future of the industry. La Palmera’s “myLPreason” campaign was recognized in the Traditional Marketing category for executing an award-winning strategy across a number of subcategories: advertising, business-to-business, cause related marketing, event and sales promotions, and public relations to re-energize the center and give back to the community. La Palmera received the award May 17 during ICSC’s RECon 2015, the world’s largest annual retail real estate convention held this year in Las Vegas.

The “myLPreason” campaign was introduced to Coastal Bend shoppers in 2014 as a way to engage them with the 1-million square foot regional mall as a brand in and of itself. Shoppers have been sharing their photos and reasons for liking and shopping at La Palmera via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook using #myLPreason. A full-length selfie mirror was also installed on the mall’s upper level to encourage shopper engagement with the mall and to promote La Palmera as a destination for shopping and dining. Shoppers receive an on-site print out of their photo when they share it via social media using #myLPreason.

Over the past year, La Palmera has seen 3.15 million impressions through the myLPreason effort, and a 22% increase in social media engagement.

“We are very pleased to have been able to build a very loyal fan base for La Palmera, and receiving industry recognition for this latest effort is very gratifying,” said Fred Walters, general manager of La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera. ““La Palmera uses both traditional and social media marketing to increase sales, traffic, and online interaction, but the ‘myLPreason’ campaign depends exclusively on our customers’ participation. It’s very common for individual brands to engage customers and build loyalty in this way, but we are a venue, which can be a little trickier.”

La Palmera uses Tint Up software to facilitate assimilation of the dozens of daily #myLPreason posts to display on screens throughout La Palmera. ArtFly Design, LLC, the designers behind the campaign, run hashtag sweepstakes across all platforms: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, giving away La Palmera Shopping District Gift Cards to encourage a continuous stream of social media chatter around the hashtag #myLPreason.

Professional recognition for the MAXI award was given to Walters; Amanda Sanchez, Assistant General Manager, La Palmera; Kymberley Scalia, Director of Corporate Marketing, Trademark Property Co.; and Amanda Garcia, Creative Director, ArtFly Design, LLC.

La Palmera Unveils New Tesla Charging Station

Only publicly available Tesla High Power Connector in the Texas Coastal Bend region

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (February 10, 2015) – Drivers of the Tesla Model S electric vehicle are now able to plug in at La Palmera with the unveiling of the car company’s High Power Connector, the first, and currently only, free public destination charging location in the Coastal Bend region.

The connector, which supplies twice the amperage of a 240V electrical outlet, will add 58 miles of range to the Model S in one hour.

There are more than 50,000 Model S vehicles on the road worldwide, and roughly 2,500 in Texas. Currently there are dozens of destination charging locations like La Palmera, with the next closest Texas locations in Houston and San Antonio. The High Power Connector, similar to those installed by Tesla owners for home use, will fully charge a Model S to a range of 256 miles in five hours. Tesla also has five Superchargers in Texas, which provide a full charge to a Model S in under an hour.

“We are pleased to be working with Tesla on this project and are excited to be part of their growing network of charging locations,” said La Palmera General Manager Fred Walters. “As a destination charging station, we will be providing a service not only to our shoppers and local owners, but to Tesla owners traveling in our state as well, who have all been waiting for a charging station in the Coastal Bend region.”

“Our growing Supercharger network has inspired Model S owners to hit the road in increasing numbers,” said Tesla Communications Manager Alexis Georgeson. “Owners can drive all day, charging for 30-40 minutes at Superchargers, and then stop at night to stay at one of the many hotels and resorts that have installed Tesla High Power Wall Connectors. By offering convenient destination charging services to Model S owners, La Palmera is replicating the convenience our owners have become accustomed to at home.”

La Palmera also offers a traditional charger for other model electric vehicles. The stations are located adjacent to mall’s exterior wall in the parking area between JCPenney and Macy’s off McArdle Road, and are marked with signage and wall graphics. Drivers will pull into one of the two designated parking spaces for charging and simply plug in the appropriate connector. The chargers are available free of charge during regular mall hours on a first come, first served basis.

Specially marked ‘E’ parking spaces for fuel-efficient and low-emitting vehicles are also available, located near mall entrances.

Taking a Rain Check on City Water Use

New cistern at The Shops at La Palmera making good use of collected rainwater

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (January 27, 2015) – Every cloud has a silver lining for The Shops at La Palmera, particularly when those clouds hold rain.

A 5,300-gallon cistern located between T.J. Maxx and Big Lots now collects runoff rainwater for landscape irrigation, allowing The Shops at La Palmera to offset its use of municipal water. A full cistern provides one week’s worth of watering.

“This is our latest effort to conserve water, complementing what we already do at La Palmera,” said Fred Walters, general manager of La Palmera and The Shops at La Palmera. “It only makes sense to utilize this type of technology, which is really just a new spin on the old fashioned rain barrel. It allows us to collect what would otherwise be runoff and put it to good use. As far as we know, this is the first commercial cistern system in the Coastal Bend region.”

Made of corrugated galvanized steel, with a geo-textile pre-liner and PVC liner system, the tank stores runoff rainwater flowing from the building with the largest roof surface area, approximately 74,200 square feet. The water is filtered for sediment as it flows off the roof through a downspout into the tank, which is connected with a pump to the irrigation system. Spec-All Products, Inc., of Austin handled the installation.

“SAP has experience with commercial grade systems, installing galvanized tanks for rainwater collection across the country since 203, but primarily operate in Texas and New Mexico,” said Peyton Shipman, general manager of Spec-All Products. “In the years prior to that, we specialized in building wooden tanks, which were the norm for storage throughout history. Commercial use is what sparked the move to the steel, which is obviously lower maintenance than wood. Although we install cisterns for existing developments like The Shops at La Palmera, we are also seeing a trend of developers including cisterns in their plans for new projects.”

Although there are many variables affecting the amount of rainwater actually collected at any given time, the general rule of thumb is approximately 600-650 gallons for every 1,000 square feet of collection area based on a 1-inch rainfall. The National Weather Service (NOAA) website lists 2014 Corpus Christi rainfall at 29.36 inches.

“We utilize native plants in our landscaping for both The Shops at La Palmera as well as La Palmera to cut down on water usage,” said Walters. “As long as Mother Nature cooperates from time to time allowing us to fill our cistern, we will be able to save even more.”

Following the completion of its two-year redevelopment in 2010, La Palmera was awarded LEED® Silver for Core and Shell 2.0 established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the first mall to receive the prestigious recognition. The mall also incorporates a number of water saving methods.

  • La Palmera saves nearly 3,000 gallons of water each day by having high-efficiency fixtures, which is enough water saved to fill up 100 bathtubs a day. That’s roughly a 46% reduction in water use through the use of high-efficiency lavatory faucets, urinals, and toilets.
  • The fountain in Center Court re-circulates 1,000 gallons of water approximately 28 times every day.
  • By using native and adapted plants, drip irrigation for all areas except lawns, and automated controllers with rain and freeze sensors, La Palmera uses about 50% less water for irrigation than standard developments of this size. That’s saving an average of 356 gallons a day.
